Hindu Thought Systems and ‘Wisdom’The Hindu Knowledge System inspires a behavioural system of tolerance, restraint and reverence. The system is embedded in several foundational assumptions such as those pertaining to God, Nature, Man, Man’s relation with other forms of life and Time. It leads to the realisation of the four ends of life (purushartha catushtaya) which are ‘righteousness’ (dharma), ‘material well-being’ (Artha), ‘fulfillment of desires’ (Kama), and ‘liberation’ from all of these (Moksha).  This lecture will explore how the Hindu relates himself to the society, the world and the cosmos, how Hinduism negotiates the need for a harmonizing, integrating system; how Hindu thought describes this world, man’s place in it and the principles that should govern his goals, conduct and actions. Professor Kapil Kapoor is Concurrent Professor of English and Sanskrit Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and is the Chief Editor of The Encyclopedia of Indian Poetics, Sahitya Academy.
